Florence

Luna Rossa - Florence - Map

The Luna Rossa hostel was almost next to the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. We entered through the largest door we'd ever seen, past an internal security gate and then through the entrance to the hostel. We were greeted by Marco, the owner and runner of the hostel. He welcomed us in, checked our passport details (we needed to show our passports for each hotel / hostel we visited) and then gave us a map of Florence. Onto this he gave us a quick run down of where the major sites were in Florence drawing them onto our new map. This proved to be very helpful for later when we would explore the city. All hotels / hostels should give you a map if you don't already have one.

Our room turned out to be very good. It was large and confortable. It had satellite TV (not that we'd go all the way to Italy to watch TV though). One really good feature was that we had internet access in our room. Yes in our room. Very handy for emailing back home and for double checking our future trains. It saved us the hassle of having to find an internet cafe.

There were two shared bathrooms that we could use. There was a separate sink which we could use for teeth brushing. All were clean and had everything we needed.

The kitchen had all the crockery and cooking equipment you might want. There was even a washing machine in there. This place does have everything you could want. Not surprisingly this has very high scores on Hostel World and has been the top rated hostel there many times.

Breakfast is not included but we made use of a local supermarket to buy some cereal, milk and strawberries which we stored in Luna Rossa's fridge.

On Thursday evening we walked around the market area which is just a few minutes walk from the hostel, and had dinner at a restaurant near to the Piazza del Duomo

Pisa

Firenze SMN to Pisa Centrale

Although we'd just arrived in Florence one of our first ports of call was to travel by train to Pisa. The journey is about 70 minutes on the regional train. I'm sure that Pisa has many things to see but we went just for one - The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Once at the station it is about a 20 minute walk to the tower. There is a map outside the station if you need help finding it.

After having explored Pisa we finally had a chance to properly see Florence. Although Florence may not contain buildings of the fame of some of the other cities it certainly does not dissapoint. We visited the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze, walked accross the famous bridge - the Ponte Vecchio, saw the view of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo (with its copy of Michelangelo's David), the Palazzo Vecchio and many other beautiful buildings.
