InterRailing In Italy and Greece

Athens

Once we arrived we had a little difficulty working out where to go - partly because of the alphabet and partly because of there being very few signs. The map in the rough guide came in handy here and we were able to make the 15 minute walk to the Aristoteles Hotel.

The Aristoteles Hotel

The Aristoteles Hotel was a good place to end our InterRail journey. The room was confortable with a balcony and good air conditioning. The sn-suite bathroom was pretty standard apart from the shower area which has to be the smallest one we'd ever seen.

The guy running the hotel was very helpful and friendly answering our questions and trying to help us. There is one internet terminal in the reception area. The hotel is big so you will probably have to queue for it and hope you are not stuck behind some inconsiderate fool. We were stuck behind a guy who decided that using the hotels one hotel internet terminal would be the perfect place to check and organise all the email which he hadn't checked since January 2006. Some people really need a slap.

The breakfast consisted of a boiled egg, some toast, cheese and ham.

We were interested in seeing the major Athens sites. We first headed in an indirect route to The Acropolis. On route we passed many interesting market areas. The Acropolis can be seen from quite a distance. Getting to it requires a bit of stamina, especially in the heat, as it is on the top of a small hill. As we went up we began to get a good view over athens. The Acropolis consists of a number of different building and temples, the most famous being the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysos. All are very impresive. The ticket (if you need one - it is free for students) allows access to all the major historical ruins. Included in the price was our next port of call the Temple of Olympian Zeus

The food in Athens was less impresive that the Italian efforts. I tried a kebab meal but found that most of the meat was just fat.

The language was less of a problem than Italy. We didn't have to attempt any Greek as pretty much everyone in the tourist attractions or restaurants spoke some basic English.

And so the time has come to leave Athens and head back home. The easiest way for us to do this was to get the metro from Omonia to Sindagma, and then get the metro from Sindagma to the Airport. A special airport ticket for two people can be bought for €10 which allow you to make your way to the airport from any metro station. The metro is modern and takes about 45 minutes from Sindagma. athens metro to airport athens inside metro to airport
